The long overdue follow up to 2002’s “It’s About Time” is finally underway. After an unsuccessful attempt back in 2005 (around the same time Live @ MI was recorded) Ernesto and I are joined by new bass player Justin Apergis.

I’m ecstatic to be working with Ernesto on another EGH record. It’s been way too long. Finding a new bass player, the right bass player however, has been a challenging task and the main reason we haven’t released a new studio record since 2002. We’ve written a few songs with a couple different guys but for one reason or another (usually scheduling conflicts or musical direction) it just never worked out.

So although it’s been a long road I’m happy to be playing with Justin. He’s an excellent bass player and a joy to play with. As the kind of music we play can often be experimental and open to much interpretation it requires a good amount of trust in who you are playing with. I’ve played with Ernesto for years so that’s not a problem but building chemistry with a new bass player inside the confines of the EGH world was bound to take some time, right?

We’ve been writing for couple of months and are about half way finished, writing that is, the new record. As far as adjusting to a new bass player it literally only took a few rehearsals to feel like we had been playing together for years. The new material has some great grooves, roller coaster like arrangements with a some great soloing thrown in for good measure.

Having an outlet to express myself musically without any limitations is very important to me not only as an instrumentalist (getting to push my personal boundaries) but also as a musician and band member. That doesn’t mean we just play whatever we want to play (we establish guidelines depending on what we are trying to express musically, i.e. style) but we do reserve the right to stretch out musically and explore much more freely than we could playing popular music.

Music is, after all, art and if we don’t take the time to explore our art then it’s future is truly endangered.

Go out and listen to something new, something different. You don’t have to play an instrument to have music growth, we’ll provide the music if you supply the ears!

Look for the new EGH later this year as well as the remastered re-release of “Live @ MI”.
